You're not imagining it.
The healthcare system wasn't built for you. And that's not an accident.
Women are 51% of the population — and for most of modern medicine, the half that got left out. Excluded from the research. Dismissed in the exam room. Diagnosed later. Charged more. None of it is in your head. It's structural. Here's the picture, in plain terms.
Five ways the system was built without you.
Each of these is a design choice baked into how medicine researches, diagnoses, and pays for care. Together, they explain a lot of what you've lived.
Excluded from the research
For decades, women were routinely left out of clinical trials. Much of modern medicine — and the AI now built on that data — still reflects a male baseline. We're treated with knowledge that was never really about us.
Dismissed in the room
“It's normal.” “It's stress.” “It's just hormones.” Women's symptoms are second-guessed more often and taken seriously later — so real conditions go unnamed for years.
Diagnosed later
Across hundreds of conditions, women wait longer for answers. In fertility, PCOS, and endometriosis especially, the diagnosis struggle is the rule, not the exception.
Charged more, covered less
Women carry more out-of-pocket cost for care they didn't choose to need — surprise bills, gaps for menopause and fertility, hours lost fighting their own plan.
Under-researched still
Conditions that affect millions of women remain wildly under-studied. The 2002 WHI study alone set hormone-therapy knowledge back two decades — and the correction is still catching up.

When women compare notes, the pattern is undeniable.
We studied 399 real conversations across Reddit and TikTok. The same story kept surfacing — not “what's wrong with me,” but “why did no one tell me this is normal for so many of us?”

Knowing it's the system is step one. Changing it is the whole point.
51& is the membership that helps you work the system as it is today — savings, screenings, doctor prep, a community of women who get it — while at least 51¢ of every dollar funds the work to rebuild it: policy, reimbursement, research, and the cultural conversation.
